Tuban Earthquake Impact: Homes, Schools, and Hospitals Damaged

Buildings reported damaged by the quake were scattered in a number of areas.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA — The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of East Java Province (Jatim) reported that a number of buildings were damaged due to the impact of the earthquake centered in the northeast of Tuban region. Damaged buildings, among others, residents' houses, schools, and hospitals (hospitals).

Jatim Provincial BPBD Chief Executive Gatot Soebroto said that it was reported that at least six houses suffered minor damage in the area of Gresik Regency. “Then two schools were lightly damaged in Bawean Island, Gresik Regency, as well as one house was heavily damaged in the area of Tuban Regency,” he told reporters in Surabaya on Friday (23/3/2024) evening.

In addition, in the city of Surabaya, five buildings were reported damaged by the earthquake. Three of them are called the buildings of RSUD dr Mohamad Soewandhie, RS Jiwa Menur, and Hospital Universitas Airlangga.

“For the temporary victims only two people. One victim was hit by a precariously falling from the roof of a house. One more victim of the fall of the collapsed wall. The two victims were in Gresik and Surabaya,” Gatot said.

On Friday, a series of earthquakes were reported. By nightfall, at least 60 quakes were reported. “The strongest tremor of the earthquake occurred at 15:57 WIB, which is magnitude 6.5. Such a series of quakes is not potentially a tsunami,” Gatot said.

Gatot said that Jatim Provincial BPBD continues to conduct earthquake impact data and carry out management efforts. “Including setting up refugee tents for residents in various areas affected by the earthquake,” he said.
