Gibran: Merchants to Obey Ban on Selling Dog Meat

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SOLO -- The Surakarta City Government conducted an academic study related to the circular letter (SE) regulating the sale of dog meat.

“Just yesterday we signed SE dog meat. We are following up with the academic study,” Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka said in Solo, Central Java, on Tuesday.

Previously, the City Government (Pemkot) of Surakarta has issued Circular Letter (SE) Number 38/597/2024 on the Recommendation for Safe and Healthy Consumption of Food Products of Animal Origin in Surakarta City. In the SE, the government appealed to the public not to consume dog meat.

He said there were proposals from a number of parties for the SE to be upgraded to a regional regulation. Therefore, it considers it necessary to make an academic study first.

“That's why we did the academic study first. The important thing is that we are not a problem later so either way or what, the important thing is that traders can continue their efforts in other areas,” he said.

He said so far dog meat traders have been quite cooperative despite the rise of the SE, including the Dog Meat Free community which also seeks to relieve traders who want to switch sales types.

“From the Dog Meat Free community the initiative collects CSR to later become capital for traders,” he said.

Thus, he said, all moves in addressing the sale of dog meat in Solo City. “If it is from SE that it is of a persuasive nature and continues with academic studies,” he said.

Earlier, the Head of the Department of Agriculture, Food Security, and Fisheries of the City of Surakarta Eko Nugroho said that he had been asked by the Regional Secretariat of the City of Surakarta to make an academic study on the matter. The Government plans to increase the Mayor's SE on the call for the consumption of safe and healthy food products of animal origin to become a regulation.

“Circulars are only a less powerful inducement to regulate circulation. Its application is also based on public awareness, so it will be improved as a result,” he said.
