REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Prophet Muhammad announced that his people would be divided into 73 factions, and only one of them survived, who was it?
Excerpted from Ibn Jauzi's book Talbis Iblis with the, from Ibn Umar Radhiyallahu Anhuma, he said, “The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him).”
ليأتينَّ على أمَّتي ما أتى على بني إسرائيل حَذوَ النَّعلِ بالنَّعلِ ، حتَّى إن كانَ مِنهم من أتى أُمَّهُ علانيَةً لَكانَ في أمَّتي من يصنعُ ذلِكَ ، وإنَّ بَني إسرائيل تفرَّقت على ثِنتينِ وسبعينَ ملَّةً ، وتفترقُ أمَّتي على ثلاثٍ وسبعينَ ملَّةً ، كلُّهم في النَّارِ إلَّا ملَّةً واحِدةً ، قالوا : مَن هيَ يا رسولَ اللَّهِ ؟ قالَ : ما أَنا علَيهِ وأَصحابي
What the Children of Israel experienced, such as the sharing of sandals with their spouses, until any of them smote their mother openly, surely some of my people will do so. And indeed the Children of Israel are divided into 72 groups, and my people will be divided into 73 groups, all in Hell, except one.” The Companions asked, “Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “These are those who are in my teaching and my friends.”
Abu Dawud recounted in his book of Sunnah, from the hadith of Mu'awiyah ibn Abu Sufyan that once he stood up while speaking:
ألا إنَّ مَن قبلَكم من أهلِ الكتابِ افتَرقوا على ثِنتين وسبعين مِلَّةً ، وإنَّ هذهِ المِلَّةَ ستَفترِقُ على ثلاثٍ وسبعين : ثِنتانِ وسبعونَ في النَّارِ ، وواحدةٌ في الجنَّةِ ، وهيَ الجماعةُ وإنَّهُ سيخرجُ من أُمَّتي أقوامٌ تَجارى بِهم تلكَ الأهواءُ كما يَتَجارى الكَلبُ لصاحِبِه
“Know that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) stood before us, and he said: 'Allah's Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). In the name of the Lord, the Lord of the Lord of the Lord of the Holy Land, and the Lord of the Apostles, and the Lord of the Apostles, and the Kingdom of El-Jinnah, and the Kingdom of Jama'a and Vinnah of Sihraji. “Know, O people, people.”
Before you, the Ahlul Kitab had split into 72 groups. And this people (Islam) will be divided into 73 groups of 72 groups in Hell, and one group in Heaven, Al-Jama'ah. And verily, there will come out of my people a group of men whose lust (heresy) has consumed themselves as the sickness of a mad dog has consumed their appetites.”
Ayyub said: “Among the happiness of the youth and the Ajam (non-Arab) is when Allah guides them both to learn from the scholar Ahlus Sunnah”.
Sufyan ats-Tsauri said: “Beg each other to do good to the Ahlus Sunnah because they are strangers”.
Jonah the son of Abul A'la said: “I heard Ash-Shafi'i say: 'If I see a man of the hadith, it is as if I see a friend of the Prophet. '
Of al-Junaid, he said: “All roads are closed to man, except for those who follow the footsteps of the Messenger of Allah, follow the Sunnah, and follow his teachings. Because all the doors of goodness were open to him, God said: “
لَقَدۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ فِىۡ رَسُوۡلِ اللّٰهِ اُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ...
“Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was a good example for you.” (Al-Ahzab verse 21).
