REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Former governor of Papua, Lukas Enembe, passed away on Tuesday (26/12/2023). Lukas died at RSPAD Gatot Subroto in Jakarta due to illness.
The local Papuan politician passed away as he is currently serving a period of imprisonment due to a corruption case.
“Yes, that's right. We were given the news this morning, at about 10 o'clock, that Mr Lukas has died,” said Lukas Lawyer Member, Aloysus Renwarin, when contacted by Republika.co.id, from Jakarta, Tuesday (26/12/2023).
Aloysus said that currently Lukas Enembe's remains are still in the RSPAD in Jakarta. It is planned that on Wednesday (27/12/2023), the remains will be brought to Papua. “The plan from the family is that tomorrow the remains will be brought to Jayapura,” Aloysus said.
Antonius Eko Nugroho, who is also Lukas' team of lawyers, also confirmed Lukas' death information. “He (Luke Enembe) died after receiving the care of a team of doctors at the RSPAD,” he said.
Eko said that currently the family is still in Jakarta to bring Lukas' body to Jayapura, on Wednesday (27/12/2023). Luke Enembe is a convicted corruption of bribes and gratuities. His case has been handled by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) since 2022.
In October 2023, Jakarta District Court for Corruption Crimes (PN Tipikor) declared Lukas Enembe guilty. The judge sentenced him to eight years in prison. Lukas Enembe was also sentenced to compensate the state for losses of Rp 19.6 billion. At the appellate level, the sentence against Lukas Enembe was toughened.
On December 7, 2023, the High Court (PT) of DKI Jakarta amended the previous judicial ruling by sentencing Lukas Enembe to 10 years.
Since in the court of first instance, Lukas Enembe vehemently denied himself committing corruption. And from several attempts at detention, and attendance at the trial, Lukas Enembe has indeed been rumored to be in ill health.
