REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- Chairman General Manager of the Great Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), KH Yahya Cholil Staquf will clarify the meaning of Religious Moderation to the delegates of countries attending the Asian-African and Latin American Conference on Religious Moderation (KMBAAA) on 20-22 December 2023. It was done to convince them that religion could really be the solution to conflicts going on in different parts of the world today.

“First of all, let us first clarify what religious moderation means. That the meaning of religious moderation is the willingness of religions to subscribe to the principles of the UN Charter,” said Gus Yahya while attending the opening of the KMBAAA event held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and PBNU at Gedung Merdeka, Bandung, Wednesday (20/12/2023).

Before the UN Charter existed, Gus Yahya continued, the followers of the religion fought and killed each other. If that is not to be repeated, he said, then all parties must reaffirm the principles of the UN Charter.

“Now if we want to survive together, let us return to the principles of the UN charter, religious moderation. And if we want with that agreement, then the religion will continue to operate various kinds of teachings that are really needed by mankind,” said Gus Yahya.

He said that the UN Charter itself is in fact already ideal. According to him, the UN Charter was a consensus that initiated a peaceful order during this time. “That there are still many problems now, it is because global actors are not able to be consistent in holding to the principles of the UN charter,” said Gus Yahya.

“We want to talk about the Ukrainian war, the Palestinian war, wars everywhere, let's go back to the principles of the UN charter,” he said.

If the international consensus of the UN Charter is abandoned, he added, humanity will return to the old mode of colonizing each other again.

“We alone have been colonized for how long, and after we have fought bloody battles then there is an international consensus to stop. There can be no more colonization, "says Gus Yahya.
