REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA --In the Quran every Muslim will find an image that shows zakat as an institution in a real society. There are four verses of the Quran that explain this, including:
First, Al Baqarah verse 254,
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْفِقُوا مِمَّا رَزَقْنَاكُمْ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ يَوْمٌ لَا بَيْعٌ فِيهِ وَلَا خُلَّةٌ وَلَا شَفَاعَةٌ ۗ وَالْكَافِرُونَ هُمُ الظَّالِمُونَ
O you who believe, take up a portion of the sustenance We have given you before the Day of Judgment, for which there is no sale, no intimate friendship, and no intercession. The unbelievers are the wrongdoers.
Second At taubah verse 34
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِنَ الْأَحْبَارِ وَالرُّهْبَانِ لَيَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوَالَ النَّاسِ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ۗ وَالَّذِينَ يَكْنِزُونَ الذَّهَبَ وَالْفِضَّةَ وَلَا يُنْفِقُونَهَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَبَشِّرْهُمْ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ
O you who believe, indeed, many of the rabbis and monks devour human possessions in vain and turn them away from the way of Allah. Those who keep gold and silver, but do not put it in the way of Allah, give them the glad tidings of a painful punishment.
Third, An nur verse 56
وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
Pray, pay zakat, and obey the Messenger (Prophet Muhammad) so that you may have mercy.
Fourth, Al Mujalah verse 13
أَأَشْفَقْتُمْ أَنْ تُقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ نَجْوَاكُمْ صَدَقَاتٍ ۚ فَإِذْ لَمْ تَفْعَلُوا وَتَابَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
Are you afraid (of being poor) if you give alms before (having) secret talks with the Apostle? If you do not do so and Allah forgives you, pray, pay zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. God has full control over what you do.
