REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- A leader must be fair in leading his people. For justice makes the people feel comfortable, secure, and peaceful. And in addition to having to be fair, a leader is also important to have a meek nature towards his people. It is full of compassion and does not apply arbitrarily, let alone deprive its people of rights. The two, the just and the meek, must exist in the soul of a leader. As in the book at Targhib wat Tarhib recites a hadith:

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Above all, a man with Allah is a righteous leader who is meek (compassionate) on the Day of Resurrection. And as bad as the servant of God is his rank on the Day of Resurrection, that is, the unjust and abusive leader (Hr. Thabarani).

The righteous (almuqsitiyn) in the Hereafter will attain such high degrees with Allah. They are placed in a place filled with light. For as long as in the world a person is fair in all his affairs. It means that when he is trusted to be a leader he is fair in issuing policies, when he is a judge then he is fair in deciding cases, when he is a husband he is fair to his wife and children.

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely those who are just by Allah will be in high places (pulpits) made of light, on the right hand of the Most Merciful. His two hands are the right hands of those who are just in their decisions, in their families and in everything that is entrusted to them” (HR. Muslim and Nasai).

Doing righteousness is one of the main forms of worship. Even doing justice is more important than the practices of Sunnah such as evening prayers and decades of Sunnah fasting. Why? Because when a person is able to be fair in his affairs or fair in deciding a case, the impact on life will be so great.

Of Abi Hurairah, the Prophet Muhammad said: “O Abu Hurairah, the fair moment is more important than sixty years of worship. That is, waking up at night and fasting during the day. O Abu Hurairah, to waste a moment in deciding that matter is heavier and greater is his sin on the side of Allah Azza wa Jalla than the testimony of sixty years” (H.R. Al Ashbihani).

Therefore, when a person is appointed to be a leader, it is fair. Be careful not to decide unilaterally because of the interests of a group of people. Then injustice will lead to hell.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “No one is in charge of the affairs of this people, and then there is no justice done to the people unless Allah plunges them into hell” (HR. Thabarani).
