REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) for Fatwa Asrorun Niam Sholeh encourages support for Palestinian independence through the distribution of zakat, infak and alms for the sake of the struggle of the Palestinian people. Zakat is a obligatory almsgiving of every financially able Muslim and Muslimah.
“Muslims are called upon to support the Palestinian struggle, such as the movement to raise humanitarian funds and struggles, pray for victory, and perform ghaib prayers for Palestinian martyrs,” Niam said while delivering the fatwa recommendation, in Jakarta on Friday.
He also said zakat from Muslims in Indonesia could be distributed for humanitarian aid and urgent needs in Palestine. To this end, Niam invited the National Amil Zakat Agency (Baznas) and the Amil Zakat Institute (LAZ) to rally zakat, infak, alms to help the struggle of Muslims in Palestine.
“Basically, zakat funds should be distributed to mustahiks who are around the muzakki. In the event of an emergency or urgent need, zakat funds can be distributed to those who are located further away, such as for the Palestinian struggle,” he said.
As stated in Fatwa No. 83 of 2023 on the Law of Support for Palestine, MUI recommends that Muslims support the Palestinian struggle, such as the movement to raise humanitarian funds and struggles, pray for victory, and perform ghaib prayers for Palestinian martyrs.
Then the government was urged to take decisive steps to help the Palestinian struggle, such as through the path of diplomacy at the United Nations to stop the war and sanctions on Israel, the delivery of humanitarian aid, and the consolidation of the countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to pressure Israel to stop its aggression.
He also urged Muslims to avoid as much as possible dealing with or using Israeli and Israeli-affiliated products and those who support colonialism and Zionism. “Support for Palestinian independence is currently mandatory. So we must not support those who fight the Palestinians, including the use of products whose results are in real support of the killing of Palestinians,” he said.
Niam added that this fatwa is discussed as a form of MUI's religious responsibility in responding to Israeli aggression against Palestinians that threaten humanity.
