REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - the commemoration of the National Santri Day 2023 spread to Islamic boarding schools in various regions on Sunday (22/10/2023). Many reminded of the roel of the santris, the term for Islamic religious students in Indonesia, on liberating the nation from colonialism.
In Pondok Pesantren Pasca Tahfiz Bayt Alquran Jakarta, the students march in the boarding school yard led directly by the caretaker of the Pasca Tahfiz Bayt Alquran boarding school, KH Syahrullah Iskandar. After the ceremony, the santri and the surrounding citizens organized various races and recreational competition.
According to Kiai Shahrullah, this was done to enliven the commemoration of the national santri day while also educating the people about the santri world and its history.
“Santri is a generation of a nation that in the course of its history has a strong and peaceful resilience and has struggled in gaining independence since the 18th century. Long before the independence of the Republic of Indonesia, Santri has been fighting for it. Then after the independence of the Republic of Indonesia in 1945 even before that, santri was also involved in it and until now santri also in filling independence and caring for independence. Of course, the role of santri cannot be ignored, therefore santri is the generation of the nation that is expected to contribute continuously positively to the nation and beloved homeland,” Ustadz Syahrullah Iskandar told Republika on Sunday,(22/10/2023).
Kiai Shahrullah said there are many series of activities that Tahfiz Bayt Quran students follow in commemoration of National Santri Day. Among several Santri Bayt Alquran participated in a photography competition organized by the Ministry of PUPR.
In addition, several Bayt Quran santri also participated in the book teaching competition and qowaidul ushul and photography competitions organized by Pengurus Besar Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU).
Meanwhile, the Bayt Quran santri collaborates with the surrounding residents and also organizes various races.
According to him, santri should get used to and understand globalization and its movements so that it does not go out of style.
In addition, santri is also expected to be able to collaborate with various parties to advance the nation.
Therefore, according to him, the capacity and capabilities that Santri has should be able to collaborate with other parties that have different fields so that they can integrate with each other.
The National Santri Day in Indonesia commemorate the role of santris in defending the independence after the rearrival of Dutch and British occupation force after the proclamation of independence in 1945. In 22 October that year, the Nahdlatul Ulama release Fatwa Jihad, a religious ruling about the obligation of every Muslim in Indonesia to resist the occupation.
The chain of events lead to the Battle of Surabaya on November 1945. Ten of thousands of santris flocked the region to fight the occupation at the time. Thousands life lost due to the lack of sophisticated weaponry compared to the British. But the resistance cement the status of Indonesian independence.
