REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Vice President KH Ma'ruf Amin confirmed that entrepreneurs play an important role in the development of the economy and sharia in Indonesia. Because of this, Kiai Ma'ruf encouraged various efforts to proliferate Muslim or sharia-based entrepreneurs.
Sharia economics observer from the Center for Sharia Business Economics (PEBS) of the University of Indonesia Ronald Rulindo said that the Vice President should not only appeal, but should expressly order that sharia banking, especially those under the auspices of the ministry of state-owned enterprises, can reach all customers in two ways.
“So there are two options. First, Sharia first. Well, if this is the case, every Muslim bank customer is obliged to open and provide sharia services. After all, almost all banks already have sharia subsidiaries such as BUS or UUS,” he told Republika on Monday (16/10/2023).
The second option is Sharia only. That is, all banking products and services that already exist as sharia equivalents are offered only in sharia form.
“So no conventional product is the same anymore. But that doesn't mean the whole bank is sharia. It remains conventional banking, but conventional products and services have become small, especially for products for which there is no sharia only,” he explained.
He also stressed that nowadays almost all banks have sharia public banks as well as sharia business units. So, in his opinion, it is not difficult to execute either of the two options.
“So, what else do you think? After all, the majority of the Indonesian population is Muslim and the prohibition of usury also applies to all religions. After all, if it is successfully realized, the banking industry will be more stable. Banking would be fairer. Whatever their religion, they will benefit,” he said.
