REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The drugs proxy war has targeted Indonesia's millennial generation, as is indicated by increased smuggling of drugs into Indonesia, according to Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Bambang Soesatyo. International syndicates and their local accomplices were tempted and supplied various types of illicit drugs to Indonesian children and youths, he pointed out.
"Over the last two decades, Indonesian children and youths have obviously become the targets of the proxy war," Soesatyo noted in a statement here on Tuesday.
In March 2018, the Indonesian Children Protection Commission (KPAI) disclosed data that out of the total child population of 87 million, 5.9 million children are drugs addicts. The National Narcotic Agency (BNN) frequently reiterated that some 50 youngsters died of drug addictions daily, the house speaker remarked. He affirmed that families and the community need to help prevent drugs abuse, as legal enforcers alone would not be able to deal with the problem.
Last year, the BNN had identified 83 international syndicates that were smuggling and trafficking illicit drugs into Indonesia. The data indicated that a proxy war is being launched to target Indonesian children and youths to weaken and damage them, he emphasized.
Hence, he has called for a new strategy to fight drug abuse and drug trafficking in Indonesia.
