Ministry revokes call to sing Indonesia Raya in cinemas

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA --- The Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) has revoked its appeal to play and sing the national anthem Indonesia Raya in cinema halls before screening of movies. However, the Ministry did not specify the reasons.

"It has been revoked on the basis of various considerations," said Secretary of Kemenpora, Gatot S Dewa Broto on Friday (Feb 1).

Gatot admitted that the letter has caused commotion in the public. He said the Ministry was aware of resistence against the appeal to play and sing national anthem before movies in theaters in a bid to increase the sense of nationalism and patriotism among young generation.

The call for singing "Indonesia Raya" in cinema halls before screening of movies was signed by Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi on Wednesday (Jan 30). Copies of the letter number 1.30.01 / Menpora / 1/2019 were sent to the Coordinating Minister for PMK, the Coordinator Ministry of Economy, and the Head of the Creative Economy Agency.
