REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The death toll from floods and landslides, which engulfed the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi rose to 59. Meanwhile, 25 others were still missing as of Friday afternoon, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

The disaster also left 47 people injured and forced 3,481 others to flee their homes, Chief of BNPB Data and Information Center and Public Relations Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a press statement released on Friday.

He said the disaster also caused serious damage to 79 houses, moderate damage to two houses and light damage to 14 houses, with two of the houses being carried away by water currents and two buried by landslides. The flood also inundated 4,857 houses and 11,876 hectares of paddy fields.

Residents of Bung Permai Housing complex in Makassar, South Sulawesi, were evacuated as their houses inundated, Wednesday (Jan 23).

He said the disaster hit 61 sub-districts in 13 districts and one municipality. The districts included Jeneponto, Maros, Gowa, Soppeng, Wajo, Barru, Pangkep, Sidrap, Bantaeng, Takalar, Selayar, and Sinjai, while the municipality was Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province.

"Flood water began to recede in several parts of the districts. The joint SAR team continued to evacuate residents and search and rescue victims," he said.

Relief aid from several agencies continued to pour in, including from the BNPB, the military, police and national Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Social Service Ministry, and the Health Ministry.
