REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly said the government would not release convicted terrorist ustaz Abu Bakar Ba'asyir if he did not meet the stipulated legal requirements. To be eligible for parole, Ba'asyir must stated an oath of loyalty to the Republic of Indonesia and also the state ideology Pancasila.

"If he doesn't meet the requirements, he won't be released," Yasonna said at the Presidential Palace Complex, in Jakarta, on Wednesday (Jan 23).

Yasonna explained that until now the legal requirements has not been fulfilled. Although Ba'asyir did not get the parole, Yasona assured that the government will continue to provide health services to the prisoner.

"He's in the cell but we have assigned our staff to accompanied him. Every time there's a problem with his health, we immediately give access and treatment," Yasonna said.

Previously, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has stated his willingness to release Ba'asyir. He event have sent his attorney, Yusril Ihza Mahendra to informed Ba'asyir on unconditional release.

However, his administration then decided to review the plan to release Ba'asyir. The president said efforts to release Ba'asyir must be in accordance with the prevailing legal mechanism.

"This is called parole. It is not unconditional release, this is a parole. The conditions must be fulfilled. He can not be released if he doesn't fulfill the requirements. Being loyal to the Republic of Indonesia and Pancasila are very principle," Jokowi told journalists at Merdeka Palace, in Jakarta, on Tuesday (Jan 22).

According to him, the current government's move to review Ba'asyir's release was based on a sense of humanity. The health condition of the convicted terrorist case was one of his considerations.
