REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PARIT MALINTANG -- Ustaz Abdul Somad (UAS) inaugurated the Syafi'i School of Islamic Studies Center in Nagari Pauh Kambar, Nan Sabaris Sub-district, Padang Pariaman District, West Sumatra, on Monday. Thousands of Muslims attended the inauguration.

"I want to formalize this study center based on various considerations," UAS stated during a lecture at the Tabligh Akbar (grand sermon) after inaugurating the Shafi'i School of Islamic Studies Center at Nan Sabaris.

He elaborated that one consideration was that most scholars and Muslims in Indonesia adhered to the Shafi'i madhhab. UAS added that ulamas in Indonesia learnt a lot from Minangkabau clerics in Arabia, specifically Sheikh Al-Minangkabawi. Furthermore, the Minangkabau people have spread Islam in several regions of Indonesia.

"Hence, that was my answer to other people in Indonesia who were angry and if anyone questioned as to why the Shafi'i School of Islamic Studies Center was built in West Sumatra," he stated.

He expressed hope that with the establishment of the study center, Muslims would be able to learn more about the Shafi'i School. He was also optimistic that several parties would assist in the establishment of the Syafi'i School of Islamic Studies Center to develop more easily.

Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Shafi'i School of Islamic Studies Center Ustad Jel Fathullah remarked that until now, more than 50 scholars had been administrators at the study center. He explained that Padang Pariaman was chosen as the center to establish the Syafi'i School of Islamic Studies Center Management since it was the area where Islam began to develop in West Sumatra.

"The Syafi'i School of Islamic Studies Center will house a library for Muslim reverence," he revealed.

Wali Nagari Pauh Kambar, M. Nur expressed hope that the Shafi'i School of Islamic Study Center would develop not only in West Sumatra but also nationally.

"We are also ready to help the management to develop the Syafi'i School of Islamic Studies Center," he added.
