REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BALIKPAPAN — Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) commented on the discourse to reject local regulation (perda) based on religion, including sharia law, initiated among others by Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI). He assessed sharia local regulation is not a big deal that should be disputed.

JK hinted that Muslims would not by affected by the absence of sharia local regulation. He heard people were arguing about the need to implement sharia law as local regulation.

"Local regulation is only a governor's business, but sharia is an order from Allah SWT and the Prophet that we must obey, way higher than local regulation,” JK said when giving a speech at the opening of the Da'i National Gathering at the Hidayatullah Islamic Boarding School in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, Thursday (Nov 22).

JK said Qur’an and hadith are the highest guidelines for Muslims. Things that related to contradictory behaviours in religion have been stipulated in Qur’an.

“So there is no context it may or not, because there are already higher rules, for us (Muslims) the highest rules are Qur’an and hadith, there is nothing higher,” JK added.

JK stressed Muslims run sharia in accordance with the guidelines in Qur’an. Therefore, sharia local regulation or local regulation based on other religion are too small to be questioned.

“Local regulation is too small to be a problem of this nation,” JK said.
