REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) will need at least six months to publish the result of its investigation into the crash of the Lion Air JT 610 plane. Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi stated that after opening a journalism workshop here on Friday.
"I inquired from KNKT how long the process will last. It will take quite a long time, at least six months, since it involves several processes," he noted.
The minister remarked that the KNKT team is focusing on searching for the second black box, as only one was retrieved. However, the committee is still uncertain as to whether the recovered black box is the flight data recorder (FDR) or cockpit voice recorder (CVR).
"We hope it would be found in one to two days," he noted.
He said the KNKT will also seek data from the Boeing manufacturer to complete its investigation. The committee has met with the Boeing manufacturer to design the investigation process, including assistance as far as technical matters are involved, he noted.
"The KNKT has met Boeing. I do not know what they spoke about," he remarked.

The KNKT is in the process of formulating a plan to conduct joint investigation along with Boeing into the crash of the Lion Air JT 610 plane in the Java Sea in Karawang District, West Java, on Monday (Oct 29).
"We have an investigation plan. They can choose what they can help," the committee's air transportation investigator Ony Suryo Wibowo stated.
In addition, the KNKT will request for the manual book for Boeing 737 Max 8 to learn and conduct activities as part of the investigation process.
"We have no manual book for Max 8," he stated.
He said the KNKT will make efforts to find the second black box since it has not been able to decide whether the first black box it has found is an FDR or CVR.
If the CVR is not found, the KNKT will face greater difficulties in conducting the investigation in the absence of strong data, he stated. The KNKT will only have 30 days to find the second black box, he added.
