Relatives have claimed 176 bodies of Lion Air crash victims

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Relatives have claimed 176 bodies of the passengers of ill fated Lion Air plane that crashed in to the sea off Tanjung Karawang, West Java, with 189 people on board on Monday. All 189 passengers and crew members of the aircraft are feared dead, Assistant Manager of the Lion Group Tri Siswoyo said here on Tuesday.

Rescue workers picked the bodies from sea since Monday and were brought to the Crisis Center at the International Airport of Halim Perdanakusuma of Jakarta.

He said the relatives of the 176 victims came to the Crisis Center submitting a report until late afternoon on Tuesday. The relatives of three other victims identified as Ariyanti Reni, Susilo Wahyu, and Widjaya Risma have not come to submit reports to the crisis centers, Tri said.

Lion Air JT 610 crashed into the sea at Tanjung Karawang 13 minutes after taking off from Jakarta's Soekarno Hatta International Airport at 06.20 local time on its way to Pangkalpinang in Bangka Belitung Province. The rescue workers are still searching for remaining missing passengers.

A Boeing 737 Max 8 flight JT 610, operated by Lion Air, crashed in the Karawang waters on Monday, some 15 minutes after taking off from the Soekarno Hatta Airport in Banten and was en route to Pangkalpinang.

The aircraft, bearing registration number PK-LQP, was last detected on the radar at coordinates 05 46.15 S - 107 07.16 E. It was scheduled to arrive in Pangkalpinang at 7:10 a.m. local time. Basarnas confirmed that the aircraft, with 189 people on board, crashed in the Karawang waters of West Java.
