REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Director General of Land Transportation from the Ministry of Transportation will create a panic button in online transport applications. It was considered important in order to ensure the safety of both drivers and passengers.

"We will most likely include a panic button in special rental transportation services, which is a safety factor of minimum service standards," Director General of Land Transportation, Budi Setiyadi, stated in Jakarta on Monday.

He explained that the panic button will serve its purpose should the driver or the passenger encounter a dangerous situation. "This panic button is for both drivers and passengers. So if the driver is in danger, he has to turn it on. If the passenger is threatened, they would also have to turn on the application," he remarked.

He hoped that the proposal would not be rejected by any party. Moreover, it was aimed as the effort to maintain safety, in light of a number of criminal cases related to online taxis.

"This panic button is needed for safety and security. Therefore, there should not be any resistance against it. Based on the discussions with the applicators, they need protection, and so there also needs to be some kind of a treatment from the applicator tariff side. They want regulations not only for drivers but also for the applicators, "he revealed.

He further stated that the plan would be included in the draft of the ministerial regulation for online taxi, replacing PM 108 which had been thwarted by the Supreme Court. "I just met the minister. Tomorrow, I have a forum group discussion session and then we have another discussion with all the applicators, the driver alliance, and the government. Everyone is involved, and so I have made two 'draft' ministerial regulations," he added.

The points that are maintained in the next ministerial regulations are related to tariffs, quota, and marking of number plates as the KIR and stickers systems have been rejected.
