Magnitude-5.6 earthquake jolts North Sulawesi

The earthquake in N Sulawesi did not have potential to trigger a subsequent tsunami.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MANADO -- An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale jolted Manado, Bitung and North Minahasa in North Sulawesi Province, on Saturday at Noon local time. The tremor did not have potential to trigger a subsequent tsunami.

The quake's epicenter was located at 1.36 degree northern latitude and 125.46 degree eastern longitude, some 38 km southeast of Bitung, and at a depth of 97 km, Edward, Henry Mengko of the Winangun-Manado geophysics office, said, here, Saturday.

The tremor caused several inhabitants of Manado to rush out of homes, as they were traumatic with the deadly earthquake that devastated Palu, Central Sulawesi, on Sept 28, 2018.
