REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NUSA DUA -- President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi's) speech at the IMF-World Bank Plenary Annual Meeting here, Friday, drew a standing applause twice and praises from several quarters. Jokowi, in a creative way, called on the world's financial leaders attending the event to remain vigilant and enhance cooperation in the face of current global economic developments.
President Jokowi drew an analogy with a television show titled "Game of Thrones" while conveying his message.
"Lately, the relationship between developed economies is increasingly resembling the 'Game of Thrones Balance of Power,' and alliances among developed economies appear to be developing cracks. Weak cooperation and coordination have caused many problems, such as a drastic increase in the price of crude oil and also chaos in the currency market experienced by developing countries," Jokowi pointed out.
President Jokowi remarked that in the Game of Thrones series, several Great Houses and Great Families fought fiercely with one another to take control of the Iron Throne.
"Mother of Dragons" describes the life cycle. The struggle for power between the "Great Houses" was similar to a big spinning wheel.
As the wheel rotates, one Great House is victorious, while the other House is in trouble, and afterwards, the other House wins by trouncing another House.
However, the president pointed out that while the Great Houses were engaged in fighting one another, they failed to comprehend the big threat looming from the North, which is an evil winter looking to destroy and engulf the entire world with ice and destruction.
"With the fear of the threat of the evil winter, they finally realized that it is not important who sits on the "Iron Throne" but a joint power to defeat the evil winter, so that global disasters would not occur. Thus, the world would not turn into a ravaged barren land and leave all of us miserable," Jokowi stated.
"President Jokowi's speech was extraordinary, and it has increased the standard of our speech," President Managing Director of IMF Christine Lagarde remarked while lauding President Jokowi's speech.
In addition, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim praised President Jokowi's speech in his remarks.
