REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The United States Ambassador to Indonesia, Joseph R. Donovan Jr. has supported the policy of Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) regarding the divestment by 51 percent of PT. Freeport Indonesia's stake. He stated that Jokowi's call for the divestment of the American company was a profitable solution to all parties, including Freeport's shareholders.

"Jokowi has called for a mutually beneficial solution to the Papuan people, the Indonesian people, and Freeport shareholders, and I strongly agree with the call," Donovan said here on Monday.

According to the ambassador, many companies in the United States are interested to invest in Indonesia, as a whole, and in Papua, specifically. But that depends on the Indonesian Government's ability to create a good environment for companies to get the appropriate benefits.

Besides that, contract certainty for American companies in Indonesia must be consistent and regulations must be fair. If there is a change, it should be done in a transparent way.

"If the Indonesian government acts fairly on American companies that are already here, then, of course, many other American companies will also invest here," he asserted.

American companies operating in Indonesia today will be seen by other companies too," he pointed out.
