Ulemas play great role in Indonesia's independence: UAS

UAS gives a lecture in commemorating 217th death anniversary of Sultan Hamid II.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PONTIANAK — Ustaz Abdul Somad called on the people in Pontianak, West Kalimantan to love the country. He asserted that ulemas and habib played a great role in Indonesia's independence.

"By shouting Allahu Akbar, ulemas and habib fight for Indonesia's independence and their love to the nation has never been confronted," he said during a lecture at the peak of the 217th death anniversary of the Pontianak city founder, Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie on Monday (Sept 10) night. 

Ustaz Somad said Sultan Hamid II or Syarif Abdul Hamid Alkadrie has given tremendous contribution to Indonesia. Sultan Hamid II, who was the eldest son of the 6th Sultan of Pontianak, was the designer of Indonesian emblem, Garuda Pancasila.

On that occasion, ustaz Somad also invited young people to act positively. He reminded that lust must be resisted with good activities.

"Young people must get busy with positive activities," he said.

On the other hand, ustaz Somad reminded importance of having power, rich, religious, and remembering death. He asserted people should look up to Sultan Pontianak whose name was still remembered by the people.

"We commemorate his death anniversary because he was a good man, he has done good deeds to his religion and nation," ustaz Somad said.
