REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Advisory Council chairman Din Syamsuddin asserted KH Ma’ruf Amin has been inactive as MUI general chairman. According to him, Kiai Ma'ruf was no longer in charge.
Din said Kiai Ma'ruf did what he should. “One of the articles in MUI statute stated that MUI general chairman and secretary may not serve double posts in MUI and politics,” said Din on Wednesday (August 29).
According to Din, the rules was regulated in MUI statute. Therefore, the organization will hold a meeting to determine Kiai Ma’ruf status.
“This afternoon there all be MUI Advisory Council meeting to discuss and formulate or decide,” Din added.
Earlier, MUI deputy chairman Zainut Tauhid said Kiai Ma’ruf has decided to resign from his post. According to him, Kiai Ma'ruf wanted to ensure that his post as incumbent President Joko Widodo (Jokowi)’s running mate did not lead to pros and cons in the community and MUI.
"The aim is to maintain the independence of the MUI from the dynamics of practical politics,” Zainut said.
