REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia has asked the Netherlands to give the most severe punishment to the rapist of an Indonesian student in Rotterdam recently. Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi conveyed her concern over the case.
"She called for special attention from the Dutch government, especially its security authorities," director of citizen protection and legal entities Lalu Muhammad Iqbal said here on Thursday.
Marsudi communicated with her Dutch counterpart Stef Blok over the incident. Blok stated that the Dutch community had been shocked by the incident and had expressed deep sympathy to the victim and her family.
He assured that the Dutch police would do their best to deal with it and arrest and punish the suspect. The suspect was arrested on Tuesday night, based on the short explanation from the victim to the police as well as pictures from surveillance cameras, on route from Rotterdam Central station to her residence in Herman Bavink-straat on Saturday.
The victim was attacked and raped when she was parking her bicycle near her home. She was seriously wounded and was immediately taken to the hospital by people in the neighborhood.
The Dutch police revealed that the arrest of the suspect was a big step in the investigation of the case, according to NL Times.
From the first day since the incident was revealed, the Indonesian embassy representatives have been in Rotterdam, in case the victim or her family would need help, and coordinating with the local authorities to deal with it.
The father and brother of the victim, who is an exchange student of Erasmus University, have been in Rotterdam to accompany her.
