REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Jakarta City emerged as the global winner of the "We Love Cities 2018" event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature. Jakarta also chosen as the national winner of the One Planet City Challenge (OPCC).

With this victory, Jakarta has the right to hold the title of most beloved city and beat several other major cities in the world, including Tokyo, Vancouver, and Kuala Lumpur.

"Jakarta won with a huge margin of support as compared to other cities. This demonstrates Jakarta's ability to embrace its citizens to provide support in this international campaign event," Isnawa Adji, head of the Jakarta Environment Agency, stated here on Thursday.

After conducting a massive campaign from May 7 to June 30, 2018, Jakarta succeeded in emerging as the winner. This award was the result of the contribution of Jakarta's residents to lend their support to their beloved city through voting and suggestions for improving urban development.

Jakarta, as the winner of the 2018 We Love Cities campaign and the national winner of OPCC, will receive a certificate and global recognition at the OPCC Global Awards Ceremony to be held as part of the series of events for the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, the United States, on September 12-14, 2018.

"The Jakarta governor and vice governor also created a short video to promote it through social media," he revealed.

One of the key factors contributing to Jakarta's victory is interaction through social media using the "#WeLoveJakarta" hashtag, which recorded 164,954 interactions on social media and 4,464 suggestions to make Jakarta better for its citizens.

The Environment Office has long been using social media to establish communication between local governments and communities in support of Jakarta's development programs in the field of environment and hygiene management, he stated.

"In accordance with the policy of Governor Baswedan, building Jakarta must be based on a motion-based approach," he noted.

The pattern of development involves all elements of Jakarta to work together.
