REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The management of Soekarno-Hatta Airport will build terminal IV to increase passenger capacity. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has given the instruction regarding the project.
"I have instructed the Minister of Transportation, the President Director of Angkasas Pura II, to anticipate the plan to prepare the construction of terminal IV as early as possible," Jokowi said, while observing the runway of Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, on Thursday.
There are two projects being undertaken at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, namely a runway of 3,000 meters and a taxi way of 3,160 meters long. Both developments cost up to about Rp1.5 trillion (about US$106,425,000), with the construction of a new runway beginning in March 2018.
"The current number of passenger is 60 million passengers, more or less 63 million at most. We estimate that by 2025, the number will be more than 100 million passengers. The terminal should be immediately constructed to anticipate the overcapacity," the president noted.
The terminal IV is planned to be built on the former Suwarna golf course, which is still in Soekarno-Hatta area. The project value estimated around Rp11 trillion (about $780,450,000).
"There are some preparations that I am checking today, and Alhamdullilah, all are in line with the target. We really hope that air transportation service for passengers could be available well," he remarked.
Terminal IV is still in the process of detail design. "The construction is still in detail engineering design. We expect the construction to begin by 2020," Jokowi revealed
He also handed over the development process to Angkasa Pura II, as the manager of Soekarno-Hatta airport.
"We try to involve the private sectors in every development project. As it is B2B (business-to-business), Angkasa Pura II can decide with whom it will cooperate with," he explained.
Earlier, Jokowi inspected the construction of Soekarno-Hatta Airport's third runway. Soekarno-Hatta Airport is the busiest airport in our country.
"As we know, the development of air passengers in the country has reached some nine percent, which is such a fast growth," the president stated at the construction site at Soekarno-Hatta Airport.
The airport has two construction projects, a three thousand-meter long runway project and 3,160-meter-long taxi way, which would need at least Rp1.5 trillion of fund. Construction of the runway started in March, and it still faced some problems regarding land release.
"We continue to construct new airport and new terminals. Among the airports that we developed is Soekarno-Hatta Airport. What we have seen in our experience is that we have to queue up for 20 to 30 minutes before taking off," he added.
The president has expressed his hope that the development of a new taxi way would cut short the airplane's waiting time before take-off.
"The land release process has been 70 percent completed. The construction has been started, and we hope that this parallel taxi way could be finalized by the end of December 2018. While (construction of) the third runway is expected to be completed in June 2019," he stated.
