33,000 cars depart from Jakarta until Saturday afternoon

The number of cars leaving Jakarta in the current Eid season rose by some 23 percent.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BEKASI -- A total of 33,328 cars have left Jakarta through the Cikarang Toll Gate for the Eid holidays until Saturday afternoon. State-owned Jakarta-Cikampek toll road company PT Jasa Marga spokesman Herald Galingga made the remarks on Saturday.

"Our staff at the Main Cikarang Toll Gate recorded transactions for cars leaving Jakarta until 1 p.m. local time," he noted in a press statement.

Herald said the number of cars leaving the capital city in the current Eid season rose by some 23 percent from the normal level during the same period last year recorded at 27,111. He forecast that the number would reach 74,187 during the peak period expected that day based on calculation of the same period last year during which the figure reached 78,476.

Jasa Marga has appealed to motorists to ensure they maintain a sufficient balance in their toll road payment card. "We open top-up service at toll gates only during emergency," he added.

Meanwhile, some 70 traffic accidents occurred in several areas across Indonesia as of June 8, which is 7 days before the celebration of Eid al-Fitr 2018, also known as the Ketupat Operation. The accidents led to the death of 14 people and severely wounded 12 people, while 84 others suffered mild injuries.

Compared to the data from last year's operational period, the number was recorded to have gone down by 33 percent.

"Last year, there were 104 cases recorded, seven days before Ied, which led to the death of 39 people," Head of the National Police Force Public Relations division Brig.Gen. Mohammad Iqbal remarked in Jakarta, Saturday.
