REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) Commissioner for Education, Retno Listyarti said schools has not been a safe place. There are still many cases of violence at schools, she said.

"There are still many cases that tarnished the world of education, ranging from cases of physical violence, psychological violence to sexual violence in the school environment," said Retno on Wednesday (May 2).

Based on data from Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection, 84 percent of students experienced violence in school. Then, 45 percent of male students mentioned that teachers or school staff were perpetrators of violence, 40 percent of students aged 13 to 15 reported to have experienced physical abuse by their friends.

Furthermore, 75 percent of students admitted to have committed violence in school, 22 percent of female students mentioned that the perpetrators were teachers or school staff. In addition, 50 percent of children report abuse in school.

Based on KPAI data, in the first semester of 2018, physical violence and child victims of the policy dominated the reports (72 percent). Meanwhile, there were also psychological violence (9 percent), extortion violence (4 percent), and sexual violence (2 percent).

In addition, there were cases of sexual violence by teachers against students that went viral in social medias but not reported to th Commission. KPAI monitored the trend has been increasing to13 percent.

It shows that schools, that should be a safe and comfortable place for students can actually be a dangerous place, Retno said.

KPAI encouraged Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection, together with Ministry of Education and Culture, and Ministry of Religious Affairs to synergize in creating safe and comfortable schools through Child Friendly School (SRA) program. Retno said the program should not only be understood as a safe from violence school.

SRA is actually a safe, comfortable and dignified school to deliver quality Indonesian children into the next generation of reliable nation," Retno added.
