May Day celebration held smoothly: National Police

Police deploy some 20 thousand personnel to maintain security during May Day.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- - Head of Public Relations Division of Indonesian Police (Polri) Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasisto said the commemoration of the 2018 International Workers' Day or May Day in Jakarta was held safely and systematically.

Some 20 thousand police personnel have been deployed to maintain security during the May Day celebrations in Jakarta.

In addition to this, the Indonesian Police also kept ready reserve police personnel to maintain security during May Day.

"Thank God, the celebration of May Day is still conducive. I thank the workers who conducted the rallies in an orderly manner," he stated at the office of Jakarta Police, Tuesday.

The labor groups affiliated with the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Union (KSPI) have gathered at the intersection of MH Thamrin Street, Medan Merdeka Selatan Street and Medan Merdeka Barat Street since Tuesday morning. They moved to Medan Merdeka Utara Street to convey their aspirations in front of the Merdeka Palace.

From noon to afternoon, the workers also held a rally in Istora Senayan. One of their agenda was to declare a presidential candidate that will be supported by KSPI for the 2019 Presidential Election.

The rally was held in front of the complex of People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the House of Representatives (DPR)
