20,000 police officers to secure May Day rally

The May Day rally will take place from 10 a.m to 6 p.m local time.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Some 20,000 Jakarta Metropolitan Police personnel will secure the rally that will be held on International Workers' Day on Tuesday (May 1). The commemoration also known as May Day.

"Based on the data submitted by the intelligence, some 25,000 to 30,000 workers from various labour confederations will participate in the rally," Chief of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Public Relations division Police Chief Commissioner Argo Yuwono in Jakarta, Monday.

The May Day rally will take place from 10 a.m to 6 p.m local time, focusing on activity around the Presidential Palace, Senayan's Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex, the City Hall and the House of Representatives building.

Officers are also preparing parking spaces in the National Monument area, the Grand Mosque of Istiqlal and the Main Stadium of the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex, among others.

Furthermore, the workers' organisations that will take to the streets include the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Association (KSPI), Confederation of Oil and Gas Workers of Indonesia (KSPMI) and Confederation of Prosperous Workers of Indonesia (KSBSI), bearing the theme 'Stop Corporation Greed and Hegemony, Bring Welfare to the People'.

He further stated the workers were demanding a decrease in the price of electricity and that the government revoke Law No 78 of 2015 on wages.

There will also be sidelines to the workers' event in other areas, including in Bekasi, Tangerang, South Tangerang and Depok.
