Jokowi invites two Korean ambassadors

Jokowi discusses peace in Korean peninsula with South and North Korean ambassadors.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) invited two ambassadors from South Korea and North Korea to discuss the peace in Korean Peninsula at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta. South Korean Ambassador to Indonesia Kim Chang-beom and North Korean Ambassador An Kwang il arrived at the presidential palace in Jakarta around 1:30 p.m. local time.

The two then rode on a golf cart from the guard door at the State Palace to the Merdeka Palace.

Ambassador Kim and Ambassador An were seen conversing in the vehicle.

Jokowi welcomed the two Korean representatives in one room of Merdeka Palace at 2:00 p.m. local time. The president greeted the representatives before discussions.

Ambassador An and Ambassador Kim were sitting face-to-face while flanking President Jokowi.

"We fully support peace process between North Korea and South Korea. The follow-up from leaders of the countries also has been conveyed to me," said Jokowi on a press conference at State Palace on Monday (April 30).

Indonesia also expected the peace process between North Korea and South Korea continues to result peace agreement. Jokowi said the peace agreement will affect the peace process in the region and the world.

According to Jokowi, North Korea ambassador and South Korea ambassador told him that there will be a follow-up process of the two Korean Presidential meeting. He said Indonesia is ready to provide assistance in the peace process if needed.

Earlier, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in shook hands on Friday (April 27) in a demilitarized zone.

The high-level inter-Korean meeting at the South Korean Peace Building resulted in the peace agreement set out in the Panmunjeon Declaration. The first point in the declaration will build mutual prosperity and unity through the enhancement of relations and cooperation between the two countries.

The second point is to emphasize the efforts of both the Koreas in maintaining the stability and security of the region, including reducing military tensions, to avoid war on the Korean Peninsula.

Meanwhile, on the last point, the two countries agreed to actively work together to establish a permanent government regime and conduct peace solidly on the Korean Peninsula.
