REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) has postponed the implementation of Council Code of Medical Ethics (MKEK)'s decision over doctor Terawan Agus Putranto. Earlier, MKEK has suspended Terawan temporarily from his job as medical doctor.

"IDI postpones the excution of MKEK's decision due to certain circumstances, therefore its affirmed Terawan is currently is still member of IDI," said IDI general chairman Ilham Oetama Marsis on Monday (April 9).

Marsis said IDI was still conducting a number of verification process. IDI also collected additional evidences related to MKEK decision, including the answers from Terawan on his defense forum on last April 6.

According to him, MKEK decision was only a form of recommendation to IDI central board that served as an executor. Marsis said the punishment depended on the evidences.

"The postpone depends on the evidences, it can be an can be an exemption from allegations, but we can also execute the recommendation from MKEK, Marsis added.

MKEK was said to have suspended Terawan for 12 months from his job as a medical doctor due to a number of violation of ethics. Terawan who is a radiologist has performed a modified Digital Subraction Angiography (DSA) as stroke intervention. The method was popular with the term brain wash or brain flush.

A number of public figures have defended Terawan by claiming they experienced a significant improvement after receiving the treatment. However, his method was considered unusual by Indonesian doctors.

From a scientific perspective, some experts assume the method of brain wash through DSA and heparin drugs is not for the treatment and prevention of stroke. DSA were done as a diagnosis of the disease. It helped the doctors to know the appropriate treatment method.

However, IDI recommended the assessment of DSA or brainwash method conducted by the Health Technology Assesement (HTA) Ministry of Health team. Marsis explained the assessment was not the domain of IDI.
