REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU -- Riau police have unveiled two international drug syndicates and confiscated 7.5 kilograms of methamphetamine and 5,000 ecstasy pills worth Rp12.7 billion on the street. Five suspects arrested during the raid.

"They belong to two different drug rings, but the illicit drugs came from the same country, Malaysia," Drug Detective Director of the Riau police Senior Commissioner Haryono told Antara here on Wednesday.

Haryono said the first arrest took place at Pasar Minggu in the border of Pekanbaru-Duri, on March 22. Police arrested three suspects there identified as Sa, Ri and Ma.

Three big packages of methamphetamine totaling 3.5 kilograms worth around Rp3.7 billion on the street were seized from the three. On the following day on March 23, police arrested two suspects identified as JS alias Pacak and MI and confiscated 5 kg of methamphetamine worth Rp7.5 billion and 5,000 ecstasy pills worth Rp1.5 billion.

The two were nabbed at gas filling station in Rumbai, in the city of Pekanbaru.

Haryono said there were similarities between the two drug rings that the drugs were packed in Chinese tea packages with the brand of Guanyinwang.

"Our first conclusion was that the drugs belonged to the same person in Malaysia though the suspects might not know each other. They were only couriers paid up to Rp40 million each," he said.

Haryono's deputy Adj. Senior Commissioner Andri said police took more than a month of watching their movements before making the arrests.
