REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BATAM -- The plan to build Batam's ring road would start in 2019. The ring road will link Tiban residential area and Jodoh trade and business center in the city of Batam.

"Construction of the ring road would start from Tiban Princes," head of the city's Bina Marga and Water Resources office Yumasnur said here on Thursday.

Construction of the ring roadincluding a bridge would be financed with regional budget, Yumasnur said.

The ring road would be built along the beach, he said.

Batam Mayor Muhammad Rudi, asked the owners of the land to be used for the project not to make land clearing difficult.

The ring road would reduce congestion in the main road in Batam, Jalan Gajah Mada, that links the city with the Sekupang port.

From some parts of the ring road, Singapore which is only a few miles away to the north, is clearly visible.

The ring road would also attract more foreign tourists to the island especially from Singapore, the city mayor said.

"Tourism is a big contributor to the city's income amid the slump hitting the manufacturing sector," he said, adding 2.5 million foreign tourists are expected to visit Batam a year after the completion of the ring road.
