REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- A man who threw a lighted cigarette in an Orangutan's enclosure in the Bandung zoo and is known by the initials DJ has surrendered to the police in Bandung, City of West Java Province. Earlier, he expressed regret for his action.

"I feel regret and I apologize to the zoo management and Indonesian people, particularly the people in Bandung and all animal lovers. I apologize from the depth of my heart," DJ said here on Friday.

He visited the Bandung Resort Police office to explain the incident after a video showed DJ throwing a cigarette at an orangutan. The video triggered anger and negative comments from the viewers.

DJ said he had visited the zoo along with his wife and children on Sunday (March 4). He watched the primate from outside the cage when an orangutan came over to him. "The orangutan raised a hand, as if it was asking for a cigarette. I threw the cigarette to the ape," DJ said.

He added that he and his wife visited the zoo to apologize, and then the zoo management took him to the Bandung Resort Police office. Head of the Bandung Resort Police, Senior Commissioner Hendro Pandowo, said DJ violated a regulation related to animal torture. He added that the police will not detain DJ.
