Jokowi examines Jakarta MRT construction

Construction of Jakarta MRT railways to be completed in March 2018.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) inspected the progress at the site of Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) at Hotel Indonesia Boulevard area on Wednesday. Jokowi arrived at the MRT site at around 3 p.m. local time along with Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, Jakarta's Governor Anies Baswedan, National Democrat Party general chairman Surya Paloh, and PT MRT Jakarta's CEO William P Sabandar.

The president and his entourage visited the nearly 19-meter underground MRT station.

Until now, the total progress of the Hotel Indonesia Boulevard MRT Station's construction has reached 91.8 percent, comprising of 95.7 percent of underground railways, or 11,314 meter from a total of 12,275 meter, and 87.9 percent of elevated railways.

Earlier, Jakarta Governor Anies Rasyid Baswedan has appreciated the progress of development of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) in the capital city. He lauded the performance of PT MRT Jakarta.

"The progress of the MRT development has reached 90.25 percent," the governor said, while visiting the office of PT MRT Jakarta at Wisma Nusantara building in Jalan MH Thamarin in Central Jakarta, on January 25.

PT MRT Jakarta had targeted to complete the construction of the railways in March 2018.

The first phase of the MRT, stretching over 16 kilometers, from Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to the Hotel Indonesia roundabout, has been under construction since 2013. Meanwhile, MRT phase-2 will extend 8.3 kilometers from the Hotel Indonesia roundabout to Kampung Bandan, with eight underground stations: Sarinah, Monas, Harmoni, Sawah Besar, Mangga Besar, Glodok, Kota, and Kampung Bandan.

The government expected that once the first phase of the MRT becomes operational by 2019, it will be able to transport up to 173,400 passengers daily aboard 16 trains.
