REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said the military is to be engaged against terrorism when the state security and sovereignty are at stake. The military will be involved to deal with big scale terrorism threatening the state defense and sovereignty.

"But if the threat is minor threatening only public order and security police could alone handle it," Ryamizard Ryacudu said on the sidelines of a working meeting with the Commission I of the House of Representatives here on Monday.

The minister cited an example terrorism by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which aimed at taking over power. Terrorism by ISIS needs to be dealt with the military power as the terrorist group also use military hardware in their war such as tanks and bombs, he said.

Meanwhile, Chief of the Indonesian Military (TNI) Air Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, proposed revision of the Law No 15 of 2003 on Eradication of Terrorism Criminality.

Hadi Tjahjanto said TNI has the function to prevent and act against terrorism as part of the basic duty and function of TNI to protect the country sovereignty.

The military chief has sent a letter to the House of Representatives proposing revision of the Law on Eradication of Terrorism involving the military .

He explained the threat of terrorism from the military point of view and proposed changing the name of the Law on Eradication of Terrorism with Draft Law on Controlling Terrorism.
