REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JOMBANG -- Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa has said she always recalls the advice given by late former president Abdurrahman Wahid, or Gus Dur, to always protect minorities.
"At a time when Gus Dur was the president and gave a speech in the United States, he said, 'In my country I protect minorities, please in your country protect the minorities as well,'" Khofifah remarked during a speech at an event to mark the eighth death anniversary of Gus Dur at Tebuireng Pesantren here on Thursday night.
Khofifah said that Dur's advice holds significance and is also in accordance with what he did and taught during his lifetime, which is to love others.
"Gus Dur, during his lifetime, loved his neighbors and gave protection to minorities, lest there be harm to certain groups in future," Khofifah noted.
On the occasion, Parawansa also said Dur had left her a message, saying that after his demise, his tomb should be inscribed with the words, "Here Rests a Humanist."
