REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDA ACEH -- Hundreds of Aceh residents offered prayers for the victims of the 2004 tsunami at the Ulee Lheue mass grave, Meuraxa Sub-district, here, Tuesday.
Mayor Aminullah Usman of the Banda Aceh municipality participated in the mass prayers held to commemorate the tragedy that struck 13 years ago.
Rohani, a local inhabitant, said she always took part in the prayers annually, as she is certain that several of her family members, killed in the natural disaster, were buried in the mass grave.
On December 26, 2004, Aceh was devastated by an earthquake measuring 9.2 on the Richter Scale and a subsequent gigantic tsunami that claimed the lives of at least 250 thousand people and displaced nearly one million others.
