REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has decided to postpone the plan to establish a special anti-corruption detachment (Densus Tipikor) in the police. The decision was made following a limited meeting with several ministers and heads of related institutions on Tuesday.

Coordinating Minister for Political Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto said, the President has assigned him to further review the discourse on establishment of Densus Tipikor.

"Our priority is to strenghten existing institutions, especially Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Therefore, discourse on the establishment of Densus Tipikor in the police shall be stopped," he explained on Tuesday.

In addition, Wiranto said the emerge of plan to establish Densus Tipikor should be a warning to KPK. The anti-graft body has to evaluate and strenghten itself in order to be more effective in running its tasks.

"It's a warning for KPK that they need to make self-instrospection to strengthen its institutions so that KPK will be more effective in the future," Wiranto explained.

Meanwhile, Chairman of KPK, Agus Rahardjo who also attended the limited meeting said he was worry on the difficulty of inter-institutional coordination if the National police special anti-graft squad was formed.

He conveyed his opinion on the limited meeting.

"The coordination is something that is easy to say but hard to do," he said.

Previously, National Police Chief Tito Karnavian stressed that the form of a police detachment specially assigned to combat corruption was not meant to outshine KPK. However, it rather to boost its capacity to handle graft cases.
