REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of Fatwa Commission of Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Hasanuddin AF, criticized Ministry of Health which has not yet files halal certification for measles-rubella (MR) vaccine. He also mention the situation as there was a distance between the ministry and MUI in the case of halal certification of the vaccine.
"We are still considering our stance, whether we have to be noisy or not. But, we have to be careful with the issue. We have been waiting for the opportunity to meet with the ministry. However, we never get the chance to meet. As if there was distance between us," Hasanuddin said on Thursday (October 12).
He admitted until now MUI has not issued halal certification for MR vaccine. MUI also claimed they have not been asked to check the ingredients, whether it contained haram element or not.
"Up until now, there is no fatwa (edict) from MUI about the status of MR vaccine," he added.
However, Hasanuddin asked the government to pay attention to this issue. He said, we must re-refer to Law No. 33 of 2014 about halal products. According to him, so far the vaccine that has been certified halal from MUI was just two.
"Those are meningitis and flu vaccines. For emergency, meningitis in the past can be used for pilgrims, but later the halal ingredients for the vaccine is available and the old one is forbidden to use," he explained.
