REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, INDRAMAYU -- Indonesian female worker Nuryati, aged 30, was permanently disabled after suffering torture at the hands of her employer during nine years' of stay in Saudi Arabia.

"She claimed to have been treated inhumanely, resulting in her hands, chest, and face being permanently disabled," Juwarih, chairman of the Indramayu branch Indonesian Migrant Workers Union (SBMI), noted here on Tuesday.

Nuryati, who hails from Majasari Village, Indramayu, was imprisoned and treated as a slave by her female employer, with the initials SA, while working in Medina, Saudi Arabia.

"For nine years, she just stayed at home and when her employer went out, she locked the door from outside," Juwarih noted.

It was the first violation committed by SA during the initial year of Nuryati's work. Thereafter, the employer began beating and slapping her and also resorting to banging her head and yelling at her despite not having committed a mistake.

Nuryati then suffered permanent damage in 2013 when her employer doused a gasoline-like liquid that burnt her hands, chest, and face while she was asleep.

"I was shocked and panicked when I woke up, as both my hands and chest had caught fire. I immediately threw myself in the tub," she recalled.

"That is why my hands, chest, and face are permanently disabled," she added.

After receiving Nuryati's complaint, the SBMI's advocacy team will immediately review and collect pieces of evidence before reporting them to the Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers and the Ministry of Manpower.

During nine years of working in Saudi Arabia, Nuryati only managed to earn Rp121 million, when in fact, she deserved an additional Rp180 million of the remaining salary that has yet to be paid by her employer.
