Papua gubernatorial elections need special attention

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Special attention should be given to the gubernatorial elections in Papua Province in 2018, as the government has set a target to develop the area, Coordinating Minister for Political, Law, and Security Affairs Wiranto stated.

"The Papua gubernatorial elections need special attention from relevant ministries and institutions, including police officers and the State Intelligence Agency," Wiranto remarked here on Thursday.

He explained that in line with the plans and directives of Indonesian President Joko Widodo, the government is currently accelerating development in Papua.

Hence, he emphasized the need to build good teamwork between the central and regional governments.

"Certainly, the governor and district heads will play several roles; hence, we hope the regional elections in Papua next year would present highly dedicated leaders," the minister noted.

Wiranto also expressed hope that the elections would usher in leaders who harbor a spirit of nationalism and are capable of managing funds from the central government for the welfare of the local people.

"Hence, we hope the regional elections in Papua would run smoothly, orderly, safely, and peacefully," Wiranto noted.
