Muhammadiyah distributes sacrificial animal meat to Rohingya children

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUALA LUMPUR -- The Muhammadiyah chapter in Malaysia called the Malaysia Disaster Management Center (MDMC) distributed 30 packages of sacrificial animal meat to children of Rohingya Muslims staying in the country's capital city Kuala Lumpur.

"Some 30 packages of sacrificial animal meat were handed out through seven Rohingya Islamic teachers who teach 105 Rohingya children at the 'tahfidz' house," Zulfan Haidar, director of Malaysia's MDMC, noted here on Monday.

Haidar said the International Islamic School Malaysia Secondary also delivered 40 packages of sacrificial animal meat on the first day of Eid al-Adha (Idul Adha 1438 H) festivity.

"This school along with the students of IIUM (International Islamic University Malaysia) supports and provides compensation to the Rohingya children who diligently memorize the Qur'an," he disclosed.

Malaysia's MDMC will be ready to help anyone willing to contribute to easing the burden of the Rohingya community that fled to Malaysia.

Earlier, Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had appealed to the Myanmar government to stop violence against its people.

He made the official statement on Sunday (Sept 3, 2017) in the company of Coordinating Minister for Political, Security, and Legal Affairs Wiranto, Minister/State Secretary Pratikno, and Deputy Foreign Minister A. M. Fachir.

President Jokowi deplored violent incidents that have occurred in Myanmar since the past two weeks.

He said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi will meet several international figures to find a solution to Myanmar's problem.

In the meantime, Saifullah Yusuf, the Central board's chairman of the major Islamic Organization Nahdlatul Ulama, urged the United Nations to intervene to stop the killings of Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine, Myanmar.

"The United Nations must intervene and request the cessation of atrocities against ethnic Rohingyas," he informed the press on Friday (Sept 1).
