REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- The city government of Bandung will emulate Mexico's public transportation system that is claimed to have successfully changed the way people use transportation facilities.

"Mexico's transportation system is the best in the world. In the near future, I will assign the head of the transportation agency to implement a pilot (project)," Bandung's Mayor Ridwan Kamil informed reporters at his office here on Monday.

According to Kamil, who had just returned from a visit to Mexico last week, the Mexican people enjoy a highly accessible transportation system, convenient buses, high bus frequency, and numerous bus stops.

By taking a cue from such a system, the Bandung government can reduce the number of street accidents to 40 percent, reduce travel time by up to 40 percent per trip, and successfully reduce air pollution.

The system, which has changed the lifestyle of Mexicans from using private vehicles to mass transportation, has inspired the mayor to replicate it in Bandung.

Later, Kamil said, the pilot project will be implemented at the Soekarno-Hatta Street known to have a high volume of traffic.
