Be careful when digging the soil around Dieng Plateau: PVMBG

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) in Ministry of Energy and Human Resources warned the people to be careful in digging the soil more than a meter of depth around Timbang Crater, Dieng Plateau. 

The warning was given after an elevation of volcanic activities was happen in Sileri Crater.

“The people must be careful in digging the soil around Timbang Crater for more than a meter of depth as there were potential toxic gas explosion,” said the Head of PVMBG Kasbani on Sunday (July 2).

PVMBG also recommended the people to avoid any activities around the crater as the CO2 and H2S might be dangerous. However, the people were appealed to keep calm and did not be provoked by any issues related to the incident.

PVMBG asserted to coordinate with Central Java Regional Government to monitor the situation. The tourists appealed to avoid the crater area and did not conducted any activities within 100 meters of radius in Sileri Crater.

Previously, freatic explosions were reported to happen at Sileri Crater, Dieng Plateau, Kepakisan, Banjarnegara, Central Java on Sunday (July 2).  The Head of Dieng Volcano Observation Post of Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) Surip said the explosions were happen at 12.00 pm.

"It was 50 meters of height, reached the parking area of water boom,” he said.

During the incident, there were 10 tourists near the Sileri Crater. They were exposed to mud, but they were not severe. They were treated by the medical staffs at Batur Health Center. BPBD Banjarnegara reported 14 victims. No deaths were reported during the incident.
