National Book Day is a moment to speed up literacy: Minister

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendy called all element of the society to commemorate National Book Day by speeding up the literacy programs. 

“Let us use the momentum to speed up the national literacy,” said Muhadjir at his office in Jakarta on Wednesday (May 17). 

Muhadjir said one of the efforts to speed up national literacy Is by socializing the importance of reading. He encouraged books procurements at schools, public services, and others. 

The former rector of Malang Muhammadiyah University (UMM) also asked the publishers and authors to be more creative in producing books. For example, full color books could be produced for children while romantic books would be suitable for teenagers.

“While the textbooks should encourage them to read,” said him. 

According to the minister, role model was very important for literacy development. He said President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) could be a role model in developing national literacy. He confirmed that Indonesian people had very low literacy. It took 65th position among 100 countries. 

“I will not deny the survey, but do not make self-prejudice that the nation was not developed,” he said.
