REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Police would increase its alertness following a series of attacks against its personnel and headquarters this week.

"The incidents in Tuban and Banyumas have prompted us to increase our alertness. We have reminded all our personnel to tighten security and increase alertness, especially in public places. We will issue orders to specific regions as well as our headquarters regarding the security of our personnel," a police spokesman Senior Commissioner Martinus Sitompul stated here on Tuesday.

Earlier on Tuesday morning, a man attacked Central Java's Banyumas police headquarters.

The man identified as MID, 22, rushed to the police headquarters and hit a police officer. As he fled, his motorbike tumbled. He then pulled out a machete and attacked some policemen who tried to block him.

On Saturday, the police shot dead six suspected terrorists after they attempted to shoot a traffic police officer who was approaching them when he saw their car parked at the roadside.

The six refused appeals to surrender during a standoff that lasted several hours and were fatally shot by police.
