REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) appealed the social media users not to get easily provoked by sensational comments of celebrities in social media. 

“Social media users should be smart, polite, and ethical in using words to avoid offending others,” said the Deputy Secretary General of MUI Amirsyah Tambunan in Jakarta on Thursday (March 30).

Amirsyah argued that negative comments by celebrities in social media might be a form of spreading hatred. It might be followed by slanders. Therefore, he hoped the police would investigate the case based on the appropriate law. 

The Secretary of MUI Preaching Commission Fahmi Salim said the hatred spreader, especially public figures, might threaten Indonesian unity. It was a sign of unpreparedness in dealing with different opinion and perception.

"They are not ready to deal with different opinions and different political choices. Anyone who spread hatred might threaten our unity,” said Fahmi. 

Fahmi said Indonesian Muslim should not get easily provoked by any negative situation. Muslim society should be literate. A good literacy on law would be a shield for Muslims to fight any attacks from anti-Muslim groups who wanted to spread hatred to Muslims.
